A list of small, independent and/or less-nationally-known periodicals to which I subscribe:

  1. beeswax magazine (Berkeley/Oakland-based lit and art journal)
  2. ZYZZYVA (SF-based West Coast lit and art journal)
  3. Hyphen Magazine (SF-based Asian American nonprofit issues mag)
  4. Quick Fiction (almost pocket-sized flash fiction journal)
  5. Craft (next-generation craft and how-to mag)
  6. Audrey (Asian American women’s fashion and fluff mag)

The popular fellas:

  1. Blueprint (a Martha Stewart Living magazine)
  2. Food & Wine

Scanning this list makes me think I spend too much money on magazines, in addition to all the law-related periodicals that come my way (though the lit mags come out about 4 or fewer times a year).  Two or several of these will accompany aboard the plane.  I highly recommend 1 through 5.

    aloha.

with all due respect to my esteemed colleagues, i would like to think that ZYZZYVA is not “less nationally known,” but rather more.

at least among those who know literary magazines, a number that is of course rather lesser than that of those who know fashion, foodie, how-to…and other kinds of magazines.

thank you for subscribing. and finally getting around to reading the spring issue. please don’t get it all sandy and salt-watery.

    best regards,
    howard junker
    editor, ZYZZYVA
